ISHS Acta Horticulturae 226: International Symposium on Propagation of Ornamental Plants

PROPAGATION OF GLORIOSA FROM SEEDS

Author:   J. Krause
Abstract:
The coefficient of vegetative propagation of gloriosa is very low so a great number of plants can be obtained in a short time from seeds only. The yield of seeds is high if the flowering period falls in summer. The comparison of the different methods of pollination indicated good efficiency of cross-pollination. Pollen can be stored even several months in low temperature. There are about 60 seeds in one capsule but that number depends on the length of fruit. Seeds ought to be sown not earlier than in the next spring. Peat substrate is the best medium for sowing and cultivation of seedlings. Tubers can be harvested 12–14 weeks after pricking. The weight of two-armed tubers is 5–6 g only but in the next season of growing daughter tubers will reach even 20 g in the weight.
