ISHS Acta Horticulturae 226: International Symposium on Propagation of Ornamental Plants

DETERMINATION OF THE MOST SUITABLE METHODS OF HANDLING CORYLUS COLURNA L. FRUIT

Author:   J. Ninic-Todorovic
Abstract:
Corylus colurna L. is a terciary species that naturally grows in the oak and beech forests of Yugoslavia. In this research, which lasted from 1983–1986, seed samples of this species were collected in Novi Sad green areas. The trees were grown for ornamental and other reasons under urban conditions which were completely different to its natural environment. Some of the existing trees were selected as the mother-plants, from which fruits were collected for research purposes.

The results showed a considerable variation between the individual trees in terms of phenological processes, the basic morphology as well as the quality of the fruits. Different methods for long and short term storage as well as cultivation in open were taken into consideration. The best way for preserving the value and organoleptic characteristics was worked out in terms of preventing oil oxidation whose quantity in the seeds of the Corylus colurna L. is very high and variable.
