LIGHT QUALITY AND LIGHT PIPE IN THE MICROPROPAGATION OF WOODY ORNAMENTAL PLANTS

Authors:   Colin R. Norton, T. Herrington, D. Phillips, M. E. Norton
Abstract:
Tissue cultured plants are almost invariably grown under fluorescent illumination. We have developed light pipe modified growth chambers as an alternative system to distribute a point light, source, thus giving fuller control over light quality. Our system has shown enhanced shoot proliferation and quality when compared to fluorescent illuminated cultures. Using high pressure sodium lamps an increase of 1.8 to 3.8 times the shoot number was given when compared to the control (fluorescent) for similar energy input. Under blue light at 0.25 mg benzyladenine l-1 fewer shoots were produced than under control (fluorescent) light while red light increased shoot number over controls.
