FERTILIZING OF FORSYTHIA X INTERMEDIA CUTTINGS DURING ROOTING

Authors:   D. Przeradzki, D. Mac Cárthaigh
Abstract:
Cuttings of Forsythia x intermedia were taken at the end of June and put into a peat:sand mixture (2:1). A part of the boxes were filled with substrate enriched with Osmocote 16–10–13 (8–9 months) at rates 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 g per litre respectively before the cuttings were put in. After the first roots were visible, a. further part of the cuttings was foliar fed with nutrient solution in concentrations 0.1, 0,2, 0.5 %; the other one was fertilized with liquid nutrient in concentrations 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 %, what was applied to the substrate. The number of new shoots, shoot growth, dry weight of cuttings increased parallel with the increased nutrient supply. In all the treatments these parameters were significantly higher than in control group without fertilizers. Most efficient was liquid feeding to the substrate. The dry weight of roots decreased with the higher rates of fertilizing: it was greatest in the control group. The content of N, P, K and Mg in cuttings increased and Ca content was constant in all treatments. Liquid feeding caused the highest increase of content of mineral elements. The starch content decreased strongly with all fertilizing methods; it was higher in control group.
