Abstract:
Compared to the conventional methods using water, mechanical and chemical scarification were more effective for breaking all types of seed dormancy where hard and impermeable seedcoat was involved.
This was evident from a series of experiments with a certain number of species belonging to the families Mimosaceae, Cesalpinaceae, Papilionaceae, Anacardiaceae and Sapindaceae. Nevertheless, these methods are almost unknown in nursery practice in Yugoslavia.
Their stronger effect implies inevitably some modifications in standard nursery techniques decrease of sowing rates, careful timing of stratification when any of mentioned treatments is the first step in overcoming double dormancy, better coordination between presowing treatment and the sowing time in spring, the need for earlier protection against spring frost, etc.
