ISHS Acta Horticulturae 226: International Symposium on Propagation of Ornamental Plants

RESPONSES OF ROSE CULTIVAR SONIA AND THE ROOTSTOCK ROSA INDICA MAJOR TO CHANGES IN PH AND AERATION OF THE ROOT ENVIRONMENT

Authors:   N. Zieslin, P. Snir
Abstract:
Growth of primary roots of rose cv Sonia was inhibited by pH 4 and pH 8 in the nutrient solution in comparison with root growth at pH 6. Shoot growth and leaf size were not affected by pH 4 but were affected by pH 8. After 11 days in solution of pH 8 the roots of Sonia plants were dead and the leaves showed severe chlorosis. The roots of R. indica showed tolerance to high pH conditions but were not able to prevent chlorosis. There were no differences in response of Sonia and R. indica plants to anoxia in the solution.
