ISHS Acta Horticulturae 226: International Symposium on Propagation of Ornamental Plants

TECHNIQUES TO MAXIMIZE CUTTING PRODUCTION

Author:   H.F. Wilkins
Abstract:
Branching of the apical meristem is the basis of all horticultural production. The number of vegetative shoots ultimately determines the number of reproductive sites; the number of flowers formed on a meristematic site ultimately determines the number of flowers or fruit harvested. In this symposium we are primarily concerned with shoot or vegetative development and root regeneration. The understanding and control of apical dominance (branching) is of wide commercial and academic interest (Phillips, 1975, Rubenstein and Nagas, 1976). Apical dominance is a curious phenomenon and in retrospect apical dominance controls branching (cutting production) and rooting (meristematic activity).
