Abstract:
In many instances the presence of bacteria is not detectable in micropropagated plants.
The use of detection media of different kinds very often does not allow one to formulate a clearcut answer.
However, very rich detection media seem to be better suited than classical ones.
The incubation conditions during the test can also interfere with the evaluation, as well as the use of antioxidants to avoid browning of the detection medium.
Subtle symptoms can sometimes be a very good aid to identify contaminated explants, even when all the other detection aids have failed, e.g. brown spots on petioles of Gerbera, brown bracts at the base of tissue cultured Marantha.
