Abstract:
The source of contamination in micropropagation can be divided into two categories: external and internal.
The external contamination originates from the surrounding contaminated air, from technicians and from improperly sterilised tools.
Internal microbial contamination is carried inside the plant tissue.
The consequence of both types of contamination is often similar: the contaminated cultures will be lost and production costs will increase.
The means of controlling the contamination are, however, different in the two cases.
The model described in this paper optimises the amount of money spent on the control of contamination by minimising the total production costs per plant.
A case with Begonia clones that have been in production for several years is also presented.
