Abstract:
Tissue culture vessels are usually closed with loose-fitting caps in order to allow gaseous exchange with the external environment.
Mites and thrips may thus gain entry and travel from one vessel to another.
They carry fungal spores and bacteria in and on their bodies, and fungal contamination of cultures is usually the first sign of a mite or thrip infestation.
A survey suggests that 50% of laboratories have experienced problems at some time, but that control has been achieved by thorough disinfection and strict hygiene in the laboratory.
Recommendations are given for the prevention of outbreaks and for dealing with outbreaks when they occur.
