Abstract:
Sumatra disease is one of the most serious diseases of cloves in Indonesia.
A range of standard bacteriological tests, monoclonal antibodies and DNA hybridisation studies were used to examine the taxonomic relationship of the Sumatra disease bacterium (SDB) with other plant pathogenic bacteria, with the aim of developing tests for its routine identification.
In standard bacteriological tests SDB could be distinguished from other plant pathogenic bacteria only on the basis of the absence of certain characters.
Monoclonal antibodies did not discriminate between SDB and Pseudomonas solanacearum, but did not react with any other plant pathogenic bacteria.
DNA hybridisation results showed that SDB was more closely related to Ps. solanacearum than to the other plant pathogenic bacteria tested.
