FROST SUSCEPTIBILITY OF COMPACT GROWTH TYPES WITHIN TREE FRUIT SPECIES
|
| Author: | J. Blazek |
Abstract:
A part of the apple seedling orchard at Holovousy was severely damaged during January 1987 by long term frost with the minimum below -28°C. The seedlings and cultivars with compact growth habit were mostly more damaged than those of standard growth type.
The same situation was observed in an apricot orchard of advanced selections, though here the number of selections with compact growth habit was rather low.
A similar phenomenon was observed in previous years with sweet cherry compact mutants.
Several explanations of these findings are discussed.
