ISHS Acta Horticulturae 224: Fruit Breeding

RESULTS OF SMALL FRUIT BREEDING IN HUNGARY

Author:   A. Porpáczy
Abstract:
Hungary's small fruit production is 66 000–75 000 tons yearly. The more productive new varieties contribute to the increase in small fruit growing. Beside the goot foreign varieties, the Hungarian breeding work also plays an important role. We have obtained promising varieties and variety-candidates by mean of classical breeding methods - intra- and interspecific crossing- and most recently as a result of somaclonal variation. In raspberries the new varietie 'Fertodi Zamatos' /from point of vien of hardiness and taste/ and 'Fertodi 103' /suitability for mechanical harvest/ are promising. In strawberries the domestically bred variety 'Kertes' in lately spreading because of rezistance to diseases and excellent fruit quality. In black current 'Fertodi 1' has become successful for self-pollination and tolerance to powdery mildew. In red current 'Fertodi hosszufürtu' is extremely productive, tasty and can be mechanically harvested.
