ALMOND GENETIC RESOURCES IN THE USSR AND THEIR USE IN PRODUCTION AND BREEDING

Author:   V.P. Denisov
Abstract:
The diversity of commercial almond varieties in the USSR is nowadays based on the home developed cultivars: 'Desertny', 'Bumazhnoskorlupy', 'Krymskij', 'Nikitskij 2240', 'Mjagkoskorlupy', 'Sovetskij', 'Yaltinskij' and 'Turkmenskij Otlichnij'; and the foreign varieties - 'Nonpareil', Princesse 2077', 'Ne Plus Ultra', 'Drake' and 'Languedoc', /Richter, 1983/. Very valuable breeding material from point of view of winter thaws and late flowering is the cvs. 'Rachel 2033', 'Trom 2015', 'Reams', 'Italjanets 2', 'Nikitskij 1', 'Sovetskij' and 'Yaltinskij'. The genus Amygdalus is represented by 30 – 40 species combined in 3 subgenera and 5 sections. Wild almonds grow only in Eurasia in the northern hemisphere between latitudes 25° and 55° North and longitude 26° and 86° West. Mongolia with adjoining regions of USSR and a region of Central China - Kansu are separated from the rest of the genus area. Iran's flora has the largest number of species - 20. USSR has 14 almond species. Their intergeneric classification and brief characterization is given.
