ISHS Acta Horticulturae 224: Fruit Breeding

THE VALUE OF STONE CHARACTERS FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF SWEET CHERRY CULTIVARS

Author:   J. Blazková
Abstract:
Over a period of 6 years fruit from 1 145 seedlings were evaluated for their weight, dimensions and for ten stone characters. Thickness, length and weight were found to be the best objective stone characters for use in distinguishing between cultivars. However, all characters were found to be very variable, largely due to the close relationship between the stone and fruit dimension characteristics. To help overcome this problem it is recommended that stone records should be done on fruit which has been preselected for fruit weight and size. For accurate discrimination between cultivars a minimum sample size of ten stones should be recorded in each of at least three years. Stone relative to fresh fruit weights ranged between 3.7 and 8.4 %.
