JUVENILE PERIOD OF APPLE SEEDLINGS AS AFFECTED BY ROOTSTOCK, BUD ORIGIN AND GROWTH FACTORS.

Abstract:
The effect of the rootstock M27 on the juvenile period (JP) of apple seedlings was not large; it became smaller or even negligeable as the inherent JP of the population was shorter.
Using lateral compared to apical buds for propagation clearly lengthened the JP; interference with the growth of the young seedlings e.g. due to heavy topping did likewise.
Seedlings with the thicker stems in the nursery tended to have a shorter JP than the category with the thinner stems.
Pre-selection on this basis is possible.
Apple seedlings of the same populations on their own roots and on a rootstock performed similarly in The Netherlands and Switzerland, presumably because of similar growing conditions.
If these conditions are optimal and the above average seedlings only are pre-selected, the laboriez procedure of propagation on a rootstock offers no advantage.
