BIO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS ON VEGETABLE CROPPING IN GLASSHOUSES

Author:   H. RIPPEN
Abstract:
During the period from 1981 to 1986 comparative field studies have been carried out on vegetable cropping in up to 25 glasshouse firms. The studies were initiated in order to analyse the varying cultivation and working methods leading to considerable differences in factor input, cultivation period and quantity as well as quality of output.

Taking the example of greenhouse cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) it is shown that growth models may be used to reveal the influence of single factors on the success of growing. If main factors of cucumber yield, as solar radiation, temperature and plant age are eliminated by using the simulation model of Liebig (1985), the effects of other essential factors, such as fertilization and water supply may be revealed.
