HERBICIDE TREATMENTS FOR ECONOMICAL AND CONVENIENT WEED CONTROL IN THE VINEYARDS

Authors:   A.H. HASSAN, F.H. FAWZI, G.F. GHOBRIAL
Abstract:
Vineyards in Egypt are highly infested with many weed species. Therefore, it was important to plan an experiment to determine the most convenient and economical method or methods for weed control in such vineyards.

The obtained results showed that herbicide treatments were very effective in reducing the number of weeds. The effect was more pronounced by using more than one herbicide as Karmex in spring followed by Glyphosate in summer. Vine vigour and yield of grapes were improved due to herbicide and mulching treatments.

The cost herbicide treatments was many times less than mulching with plastic sheets or mechanical and hand cultivation. The net income per acre was increased by 315.8, 171.4, 130.5, 53.4 and 46.9% over control after treatments with Karmex + Glyphosate, Karmex alone, Trifluralin + Glymhosate, plastic mulching and Trifluralin, respectively. On the other hand, mechanical and hand cultivation reduced the total income by 35.7% as compared with the control.
