RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CONCENTRATION OF PRODUCTION AND CROP YIELDS IN VEGETABLE GROWING |

| Abstract:
The growing demand for vegetables in the German Democratic Republic requires a substantial increase in the overall volume of vegetable production with rising crop yields and ever higher labour productivity. The existence of large socialist farms offers good prospects for the efficient utilization of all economic potentials of concentration and specialization to the benefit of higher output in the field of vegetable production. About 62% of all farmland with field vegetables in the GDR is concentrated in about 150 farms harvesting vegetables from more than 100 hectares each. The solution of major problems regarding intensification, mechanization, organization and planning of highly concentrated and specialized production is an essential prerequisite for higher crop yields and better labour productivity in vegetable growing in the GDR. | |
