TRENDS OF CAPACITY OF APPLE PRODUCTION IN WESTERN EUROPE, NORTH AMERICA, AND THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

Author:   F. WINTER
Abstract:
The trend of overproduction within the European Community as well as the tendency of increasing importation of "off season apples" from the southern hemisphere will further continue.

The main apple cultivar is still "Golden Delicious", but with a decreasing tendency of capacity. The main "Golden" producer is France, where "Golden" represents 60 to 75% (South France) of the total production. The second cultiver in Europe and world over is "Red Delicious" as well, holding the first place in the US. "Granny Smith" is mainly grown in the southern hemisphere countries, but in France and Italy as well.

In Central and Northern Europe some "oldtimers" as "Boskoop"., "Ingrid Marie" and "Bramley's" (cooking apple in the UK) preserve an important capacity. Newcomers are "Jonagold", "Gloster", "Idared" and "Elstar".
