HORTICULTURE IN FINLAND 1986

Author:   I. NYMAN
Abstract:
By the end of October every year the statistical office of the Finnish Board of Agriculture collects information on Finnish horticultural production.

In 1986 the total area of vegetables cultivated in the open was 7 637 hectares and the area of soft fruit 3 948 hectares. The information on apple production concerned 419 hectares. The total area of nurseries was 476 hectares.

Production in greenhouses totalled 432 hectares, of which two thirds was in production for more than 7 months of the year. Vegetables were grown on 338 and flowers on 94 hectares. Both light and heavy fuel oil were common sources of heating energy in greenhouses. The covering material in greenhouses was in most cases either plastic or glass.
