CHANGES IN THE PRODUCTION OF TOMATOES IN POLAND IN THE YEARS 1960–1986

Authors:   D. DOMANSKI, J. MIERWINSKI
Abstract:
In the years 1960–1986 a significant increase of tomato production in the open and under cover was noted in Poland. It made possible that, depending upon the obtained yields in the 'eighties, the annual quantity of crops reached a level from 8 to 17 kg per one inhabitant. Market improvement in regularity in tomato supply was also reached throughout the year. However, the great variability in yields of outdoor tomatoes still continued resulting first of all from the changing weather conditions. In processing of outdoor tomatoes the importance of industrial preservation increased, although the quantities of processed tomatoes varied from year to year depending upon the crops of this vegetable. Poland is self-sufficient in fresh tomatoes intended for consumption (from April to December) as well as in the processed products, provided the instability of crops of outdoor tomatoes is reduced.
