ISHS Acta Horticulturae 222: Symposium on the Fertilization of Vegetables under Protected Cultivation

RESTRICTIONS IN VEGETATIVE GROWTH OF TOMATO PLANTS IMPOSED BY ALTERING THE NITROGEN CONCENTRATION AND THE ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF THE NUTRIENT SOLUTION

Authors:   A. Gosselin, J. Charbonneau, R. Larouche, L.-P. Vézina, M.-J. Trudel
Abstract:
Tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cvs. Carmelo and Vendor) were subjected to 4 electrical conductivities (EC) and 4 nitrogen concentrations in the nutrient solution to determine the best nutritional conditions for adequate vegetative growth and reproductive development under 2 different lighting levels. High EC and low nitrogen concentration reduced vegetative growth and favored reproductive development for both light levels and cultivar treatments. The Nitrate Reductase Activity (NRA) was related to fruit development while the Glutamine Synthetase Activity (GSA) was affected by lighting and nitrogen concentration.
