NUTRIENT SOLUTIONS-SUBSTRATES (ROCKWOOL AND PEAT) INTERACTIONS IN DRIP-IRRIGATION WITH HIGHLY SALINE WATERS

Abstract:
A glasshouse experiment was carried out to study interactions between substrates and nutrient solution to examine which concentrations of nutrients are needed for optimal plant nutrition. Tomato and pepper were used as reference plants.

Saline accumulation in the substrates caused by the use of drip-irrigation with highly saline water was also considered.

Larger elemental accumulation was observed in peat than in rockwool, especially of Na. It is, therefore, advisable to wash salts from peat by periodic watering and to increase the calcium concentration in the nutrient solution to optimalise the Ca/Na ratio.

Both plants yielded more when cultivated in peat than in rockwool.
