THE USE OF BLACK PEAT MIXTURE IN HORTICULTURAL GROWTH MEDIA |

| Abstract:
The black peat is obtained from a raised peat bog situated in the north west of Spain. It is rich in black peat, with an acid pH due to the high content of humid acids, and free of salts. There are three different layers; and upper or top layer and a middle layer both of which are suitable for preparation of substrates and a lower or bottom layer which is used as a soil conditioner, and for the extraction of humic acids, in the preparation of organo minerals fertilizers. Harvesting of the peat is done by the Finish system. The physical, chemical and physiochemical properties of the black peat are described and the possibility of using this peat as substrate after improvement with material such as perlite, vermiculite, etc., is discussed. The experiments were carried out with different types of plants: Coleus, Begonia sp., Dieffenbachia cv. "Camila", etc. The results demonstrate that this peat can be used of a basis for good substrates. | |
