A SUGGESTED MODIFICATION IN THE EXTRACTION PROCEDURE AND EXPRESSION OF EC VALUES OF GROWTH MEDIA |

| Abstract:
A new method of expressing EC values of media solutions is suggested. The method is based on water extraction of non-dried substrate according to any convenient water/medium weight ratio and adjusting the results in accordance with the moisture content at “container capacity.” The linearity of the results for various moisture contents suggests that such an extrapolation can be accomplished safely at normal salinity levels. This is further substantiated by the similarity between EC of irrigation water and the measured EC according to this method even at very high salt concentrations. The ability to predict salinity damages using this method proved to be superior to that of the common 1:10 (W:W) method. | |
