ISHS Acta Horticulturae 221: Symposium on Horticultural Substrates and their Analysis

ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR SUBSTRATES IN THE NETHERLANDS

Author:   C. Sonneveld
Abstract:
In the Dutch glasshouse horticulture rockwool, peat, peat mixtures and to a limited extent artificial foams are used as growing media. With rockwool and foams the "soil solution" is used to estimate the availability of the plant nutrients. The "soil solution" is extracted from these substrates in situ. Peaty substrates are analysed by means of the 1 : 1.5 volume-extract. The analytical data of this extract are closely correlated with the data of the "soil solution" of "field moist" peaty substrates. A definition of "field moist" conditions has to be proposed.

Possibly the composition of the "soil solution" at "field moist" conditions of substrates can be used as a standard to compare analytical data of different extraction methods of various substrates.
