POSSIBLE USE OF OZON FOR DISINFESTATION OF PLANT NUTRIENT SOLUTIONS

Authors:   A. Vanachter, L. Thys, E. Van Wambeke, C. Van Assche
Abstract:
Growing plants in hydroponic systems with recirculation or recuperation of the nutrient solution can result in the spread of pathogenic identities, such as fungi, bacteria and virusses. The prevention of the build-up of high inoculum densities, is of mean importance in such systems. For that, investigations with ozon as a disinfestation treatment were carried out. Very promising results were obtained against Corynebacterium michiganense and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. radicis-lycopersici, used as test organisms in pure water. However, after treatment of nutrient solutions, some problems with biological activity, pH and stability of Iron chelates were observed, strongly dependant on the type of chelate used. It was found that DTPA and EDTA were much more stable than EDDHA, resulting also in a much better control of the plant pathogens.
