BREEDING FOR TOMATO FRUIT QUALITY

Author:   J. Farkas
Abstract:
Breeding efforts in Hungary to improve the three most important quality characters - colour, fruit firmness, soluble solids - are surveyed.

Colour is a typical polygenic character and F1 hybrid method has good possibilities. A poligenic firmness was found which was used to breed firm, fresh market varieties. Some of them are preferred by the industry for producing paste in Hungary. A compromise is needed between firmness and fruit size in the breeding for high soluble solid content. Usage of high soluble solid species hybrid lines have not gained good practical results yet. Two further possibilities are available to improve soluble solid : 1. to change the ratio of the different parts of fruit 2. to use Tm22 and Mi in industrial hybrids.

A more intensive use of wild species and F1 hybrid method are advisable in the future.
