ISHS Acta Horticulturae 220: I International Symposium on Vegetables for Processing

YIELD AND SOME QUALITY PROPERTIES OF BRUSSELS SPROUTS AS AFFECTED BY TIME OF HARVEST AND CULTIVAR

Author:   I. Babik
Abstract:
The influence of three times of harvest on Brussels sprouts yield and internal browning incidence /IB/ in field conditions was studied. Sprouts of seven cultivars harvested at different stages of maturity: 1 - in time when about 80 percent of sprouts were at diameter of 20–30 mm, 2 - two weeks later and 3 - four weeks after first harvest. Yield, internal browning, Ca, K and NO3-N content of sprouts were determined. With the delay of harvest, total, processing and yield of large sprouts increased. The highest increase of processing yield was observed by the latest cultivars in the experiments. Highest IB was found at cultivar Dorema F1 /early/, Acropolis F1 and Valiant F1 /mid-early/.
