CULTIVARS AND LAND RACES TRIALS ON BROAD BEAN FOR PROCESSING IN SOUTHERN ITALY |

| Abstract:
Three year trials were conducted on autumn sown broad bean for freezing in southern Italy. Plant development and fresh seed yield were greatly influenced by temperature and rainfall regime during the experiments. Fresh seed yield in the first trial /5 t/ha/ was significantly higher than in the other two years and was due to more pods and seeds/plant. Over 5 t/ha of seeds were obtained from "Gemini", "MG 106364", "MG 103271", "Locale di Putignano", "MG 106361" and "MG 103259" as average among three years; the first four showed a good yield stability among years. Until new cultivars will be available, Italian cultivars and landraces look like a good source of seeds for processing; for their soluble solids content, tenderometer reading, seed size, uniformity of colour after blanching and freezing. North European cultivars, such as "Beryl" and "Korund", had a very good quality of fresh seeds but the yield was only l t/ha; this was due to the extremely low percentage of flowers that set pods, indicating a very poor adaptability to the southern Italy environment. Among Italian land race, "S. Pantaleo", because of too long pods, large seeds and high ratio plant/pods is not suitable for freezing. | |
