QUALITY OF DEEP FROZEN GREEN BEANS AS RELATED TO CULTIVAR FIELD PERFORMANCE, GROWTH HABIT AND RIPENING. |

| Abstract:
Trials were carried out on several cultivars to assess harvest date influence on yield and quality. In addition, comparative studies designed to evaluate field-yield performance and quality characteristics were conducted. Field trials evaluated the agronomic aspects (yield, ripe pods per plant, simultaneous ripening, etc.), while postharvest tests included seed to pod weight ratio, morphological traits, and organoleptic characters following deep freezing and storage at -25°C for six months. The resulting data showed that harvest date is a determining factor as to yield and product quality for the cultivar tested. Optimum quality traits were found to be closely correlated to the seed-pod ratio (mainly in the 5 and 10% range). The following cultivars had the best performance: Labrador, Nerine (large or coarse grade), Caravelle, Ingo and Rapier (medium grade), Masai (fine grade). | |
