Abstract:
Trials tested the influence of growing season (spring and autumn) and varietal characteristics on yield and suitability to deep freezing of cultivars.
In field trials the following data were collected: planting density, yield, botanical and physiological characters.
Quality assessement was conducted on fresh and frozen product.
The combination of field and quality data were used to evaluate overall cultivar adaptability to the soil and climate of Emilia-Romagna and suitability for deep freezing.
The spinach grown from February to May was poorer in quality than that cultivated in August-October, a fact mainly due to greater leafpetiole growth.
The best cultivars in terms of field performance and quality were Alwaro, Butterfly, Mazurka, Norvak, Synphonie and Spanda.
