EFFECT OF WEED CONTROL ON THE DIVERSITY AND ABUNDANCE OF INSECTS IN POTATOES |

| Abstract:
A study was carried out to assess the effect of herbicide application on the diversity and abundance of the arthropods associated with potatoes. Lower abundance of the pests occurred in plots treated with herbicides or in hand weeding treatment as compared with untreated plots (weedy potato). The reduction in pests population was mainly a result of weed removal, either chemically or mechanically, and was not a result of herbicides direct effect. The most abundant pests in potato field were Myzus persicae, Thrips tabaci, Campylomma sp. and Empoasca sp. The number of predators in the weedy potato was generally greater than that in treated plots. The most abundant predators were Coccinella undecimpunctata, Scymnus sp. and Chrysopa carnea. | |
