TOMATO SEED TREATMENT POSSIBILITIES AGAINST SEED BORNE DISEASES

Authors:   Zs. Basky, I. Aponyi
Abstract:
Potassium iodide, acetic acid, sulphuric acid, sodium hypochlorite and 12 different fungicides were used for tomato seed treatment in order to evaluate their effect on the germination, and percentage of healthy germs, emergence of the tomato seeds. Seeds were germinated on filter paper according to the international standard.

The treatments with potassium iodide, acetic acid, sulphuric acid did not increase the percentage of healthy germs compared to the control. Some of the fungicides increased the number of healthy germs when applied alone but the best effect was obtained when 2 or 3 fungicides were applied in combination.

In order to eliminate the pathogens from the seed surface 0,5 % hydrochloric acid, and 1 % sodium hypochlorite were applied separately and then together. The fungicide treatments were applied as second step. Sodium hypochlorite hampered the germination least. Carbendazim + furasolidon, carbendazim + mancozeb + kasugamicin and chlortalonil + mancozeb + kasugamicin combinations proved to be the best.
