THE EFFECT OF N SUPPLY ON THE NITRATE, SUGAR AND CAROTENE CONTENT OF CARROTS

Authors:   I. Cserni, K. Prohászka
Abstract:
The treatment of N160 kg/ha N active agent /with P140 and K360 kg/ha, P2O5, and K2O, basic fertilizers, respectively/ proved superior. Therefore, in carrots quantities of N active agent calculated upon nutrient balance /N320 kg/ha/ seem to be extremely high resulting also in high costs and environment pollution. Tests indicate a positive effect of N on the carotene content. 320 kg N calculated upon balance increased the NO3 content of roots 3–4 fold when compared with treatments of less N-supply. A provocatively high N dose, N640 kg/ha, increased NO3 content far above the allowed level /400 ppm/. Less N doses divided into three parts can be leached easily by irrigation from our sandy soils thus, they do not increase the NO3 content of roots.
