| Abstract:
The chronological development of systems for growing of transplants for processing tomatoes is described from the beginning of processing tomato production in 1870 to the present, 1987. Advantages and disadvantages of several systems are discussed, encompassing the somewhat primitive cold frames as used from the 1870's, bare root transplant production outdoors In southern climates, and the technically more-advanced and uniform greenhouse production in multi-celled plant trays that was seriously begun in Canada in 1986. The tenacious efforts of some growers that maintained domestic production using groundbeds in plastic houses is also addressed. The economic advantage of high density, multi-celled tray transplant seedling production is compared to other conventional, less advantageous systems. | |
