Abstract:
Developments in the industrial production of vegetable transplants in recent years have been significant as for example the advent of semi-automatic or automatic machinery for transplanting.
The Cultoplant-system creates good conditions for an industrial transplant-production because of a reduced substrate usage, the need of a relatively small area for cultivation and a low weight for transportation.
It is possible to get a high number of seeded plugs in a very short time and so a lot of transplants of the similar size.
However, the small volume of the individual plugs made it necessary to change the methods of normal transplant-raising.
The main factors to be taken into consideration were the optimal water and nutrient supply, the root-development of the seedlings, the plant spacing during the raising and the optimum plant size for transplanting.
Ways for an optimal usage by the different kinds of transplants are demonstrated.
