THE PRESENT SITUATION AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENT IN BREEDING OF PARTHENOCARPIC PICKLING CUCUMBER

Author:   L.A.M. Zwinkels
Abstract:
As you know, pickling cucumber growing is based on the use of predominantly female varieties, however the yield of these varieties is very dependent on weather conditions especially in the early growing season where temperatures are low and activities of insects and bees are not yet optimum. In this case fruitsetting is difficult.

Further, the colour and form of predominantly female types is not optimum.

Furthermore, it is easier with breeding in parthenocarpic material to include more disease resistances in comparison to the breeding work in predominantly female types. In addition to this we have achieved a higher yield with parthenocarpic varieties than with predominantly female types.
