HEATING AND VENTILATION CONTROL SYSTEMS IN GLASSHOUSES: AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL "SYSTEM MEEREL"

Author:   R.B. Albers
Abstract:
In recent years it has been become more and more common in tomato growing to heat and ventilate simultaneously. Particularly in the winter months when light intensity is low and the outside temperature is relatively high, this method of control is of great importance. Until recently this was generally based on the "feeling" of the grower.

Under these circumstances a little heat is necessary to keep the desired inside temperature. Intentionally, more heat is supplied than necessary, while at the same time the ventilators are opened to prevent a rise of the inside temperature. The purpose of this is to increase transpiration, if this is insufficient under the prevailing conditions. On entering the glasshouse the outside air is heated, causing a decrease of the relative humidity. So besides controlling the inside temperature, simultaneous heating and ventilation also regulates the transpiration of the plant. In this way control of climate is achieved.

An attempt has been made to automate this system of growing tomatoes.
