ISHS Acta Horticulturae 22: Symposium on Electricity and Artificial Light in Horticulture

OBJECTIVES OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL

Author:   F.R. Frampton
Abstract:
Crops that are below standard are a major cause of bad results in pure research, applied research and commercial production. The magnitude of the problem is very serious. Sub-optimal terrestrial and aerial environment is one major cause.

The objective of environmental control in both research and commerce are listed and found to be basically similar.

It is suggested that the control of temperature at two set levels (day and night) is something that the plant does not understand and that a "second generation" climate controller is required that attempts to obtain the conditions of the "Ideal Day".

It is further suggested that both research and commerce should go forward with complementary programmes and that there should be effective inter-communication.
