ISHS Acta Horticulturae 22: Symposium on Electricity and Artificial Light in Horticulture

ENVIRONMENTAL MEASUREMENTS IN A PROTOTYPE GROWING-ROOM

Authors:   T. O'Flaherty, M.J. Maher, M.J. Woods
Abstract:
The feasibility of raising young tomato plants in completely artificial light has been demonstrated by Germing (1) in The Netherlands and by Canham (2) in the United Kingdom. More recently Morgan (3) in Ireland has had very promising results with this technique. Commercial interest in the possibilities of growing-rooms has increased considerably recently and so a prototype commercial-size room was constructed at the Agricultural Institute, Kinsealy, last year. Quantified information on the environment in a commercial-type growing-room has not been reported before. This paper describes a series of measurements made in the growing-room which illustrate the degree of control achieved over the more important environmental factors, viz., light intensity, temperature and rate of air movement.
