SOME EFFECTS OF SOIL WARMING ON PLANT GROWTH

Abstract:
Investigations into the effects of soil warming on the growth responses of a wide range of plants grown under various conditions have been carried out at Shinfield, at first when it was the Field Station of the Electrical Research Association and more recently after it had been transferred to the University of Reading. In this paper, no reference is made to the earlier work on the effects of soil warming on plants grown without protection, under cloches and in cold frames, or the first experiments made with the soil temperature tanks.

A summary is given of the effects of soil warming on plants grown in constant temperature soil tanks, in heated and unheated glasshouses and in air-supported plastics structures. Among the plants included are tomato, cucumber, lettuce, narcissus, tulip, iris, dwarf bean and strawberry.
