DIPTERA OF GARLIC AND ECOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS ON DOMINANT SPECIES - SUILLIA LURIDA MEIG. /DIPT., HELOMYZIDAE/

Author:   J. Szwejda
Abstract:
Fauna of Diptera occurring on garlic was studied. The most numerous were: Hylemya antiqua, complex of H. platura and H. florilega. Suillia lurida, Muscina assimilis, M. stabulans, Elachiptera cornuta and Stetisquamolonchaea fumosa. Among them, the most important species as a pest was S. lurida. The ecological observations on the harmfulness of S. lurida which were done in 1985 and 1986 found that this species damaged up to 70 % of plants on plantations in some regions of Poland. The egg-laying period began in the middle of April and the larvae injured plants from the end of April to the beginning of June. The effective method of control was found to be the application of insecticides in the egg-laying period. The insecticides gave good results when used in granulated form or by watering and spraying in a liquid form. The best compounds were: diazinon, triazophos, isofenphos and fenofos.
