Abstract:
A comparative assessment of six rootstocks: 'Cleopatra' mandarin, 'Rangpur' lime, sour orange, two local sweet orange selections and rough lemon as a standard, was carried out at the Coast Agricultural Research Station, Mtwapa, for nine years.
Scion cultivars used were 'Valencia Late', 'Marsh Seedless' grapefruit and Mexican lime.
Results based on yield and qualities attributes showed that rough lemon, 'Rangpur' lime and 'Cleopatra' mandarin are suitable rootstocks for the coastal areas.
Scion cultivars budded on rough lemon had more vigorous growth, but the fruits had thicker peels and low soluble solids.
Budding the same scion cultivars on 'Rangpur' lime and 'Cleopatra' mandarin produced fruits of relatively better quality.
Budding on sour orange and the two local sweet orange selection resulted in poor tree establishment and low yields.
Other rootstock trials have been initiated in different agroecological zones of the Coast Province.
