Abstract:
In a survey of citrus diseases in Tanzania in 1984–1985 almost 100% of the plantations visited, appeared to be infected with one or more pathogens.
In all citrus areas surveyed Phytophthora gummosis and foot rot, psorosis, and citrus scab were found present.
Citrus greening (yellow branch) was limited to highland areas.
Tristeza, exocortis, multiple sprouting, impietratura, blue and green mould fruit rots, and various leaf spot diseases were encountered but less frequently.
To solve the disease problem, a Citrus Improvement Programme has been initiated with the objective of providing nurserymen, agricultural institutions and growers with primary sources of disease-free budwood of desirable true-to-type citrus scions and rootstocks of both local and foreign citrus cultivars.
