Abstract:
The objective of the study was to examine interspecific compatibility between the Kenyan Phaseolus vulgaris lines (GLP 2, GLP 24, GLP 1004, GLP x 92 and 1122) and Phaseolus acutifolius lines (P.I. 310801, P.I. 310606, P.I. 263590, L-246–2, L-179, CIAT G40016, Buff Hood Arizona and White Hood Arizona) by in vitro embryo culture, with regard to future genetic exchange between the two species.
Successful hybrids were procured between GLP24 x Buff Hood Arizona, GLP 1004 x CIAT G40016, 1122 x P.I. 310801.
Rooting, which was poor among the interspecific hybrids produced in vitro, was promoted either by altering media composition or trying various genotype combination.
N°-benzyladenine promoted shoot development and retarded rooting of hybrids in vitro.
Exclusion of hormones promoted both shoot and root development.
