Abstract:
In 1980 the fruit of 'Patharnakh' pear took 150 days from fruit set to harvest maturity.
Fruit growth (lenght, diameter and weight) increased from fruit set to harvest maturity in three distinct phases.
Fruit volume also increased from fruit set to the last harvest with a corresponding decrease in specific gravity.
Fruit firmness in terms of lb in-2 decreased markedly as the fruits reached harvest maturity.
TSS increased throughout the harvesting season while the changes in acid content fluctuated throughout the period of study.
Sugar (reducing and total) content increased with the advancement of harvest; however, the most noticeable increase being in fruits nearing maturity.
Starch content showed a continuous increase up to the age of 105 days after fruit set and decreased thereafter.
The total colouring pigments increased up to final harvest.
The total phenolics content showed a continuous increase up to 30 days after fruit set, after which a continuous decrease was recorded.
Changes in fruit colour and shape, number and colour of lenticels are reported.
