Abstract:
The events of the sexual process and the endogenous levels of indoleacetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA) for seeded 'Duncan' and seedless (pathenocarpic) 'Marsh' grapefruit Citrus paradisi Macdf.) from anthesis to early stages of seed development were examined.
Pollination and pollen tube growth coincided with large increases of IAA, GA and ABA. Levels of IAA, GA and ABA decreased shortly before fertilization and continued to decrease for about 40 days thereafter, at which time they levelled off.
Gibberelli acid, on the other hand, produced a second peak about 14 days after fertilization.
It was relatively difficult to establish an overall relationship between the events of sexual process and the levels of endogenous growth substances.
