ADAPTABILITY OF HEAD CABBAGE CULTIVARS TO EXTENDED PRODUCTION AND FLOWERING IN THE FIELD FROM RATOONS IN ZAMBIA

Authors:   N.A. Mnzava, W.W. Msikita
Abstract:
A low input system of head cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.)production from ratoons as a means of extending the growing season is described. Ratooning ability as a function of cultivar, season and management level is reported. Ratoon yields are higher during the winter than in summer and hybrid cultivars perform better. Although ratoon yields are lower than the plant crop, especially under low management, the cussess in floral induction and seed setting in some standard cultivars following ratooning most important implication in the mild winter tropics.
